the valley
so December has come.
the season of anticipation.
the season of joy and music.
the season of love and family.
yet not for everyone.
perhaps depression or anxiety
or another mental illness
casts a shadow over all.
or a physical illness has
replaced hope with fear.
or a family member is
no longer here on earth.
perhaps a child
taken far too soon.
perhaps a baby
in heaven before
the grieving parents
could even hold and caress.
and tears
fall
like
the rain.
perhaps a spouse
or parent or grandparent
or friend so close as to be
just. like. family.
or perhaps divorce has shattered a home.
or family members are estranged.
or never having a family at all.
whatever the circumstances,
hearts are left bleeding
and the path winding through
the season of waiting
can be overwhelming.
and the valley can seem
oh so dark
and long
and deep.
and this is when the Shepherd
softly whispers:
"Even though you walk
through the darkest valley,
you need not be afraid,
for I am close beside you.
My rod and My staff,
protect and comfort you."
Psalm 23:4
(paraphrased)
the One whose birth was
first announced to shepherds,
is the same Shepherd who speaks
so tenderly to all who are hurting.
and as you kneel at His manger
know that He is holding you close.
and that baby's name is
Immanuel...God with us.
